The Order of Malta is the oldest hospitaller order of the Catholic Church. As a hospitaller order, we are dedicated to assistance for the sick and those in need, with a preference for the poorest. The term hospitaller comes from the medieval concept of “hospital” which was not limited to providing medical attention, but rather provided whatever assistance was necessary – medical, substance, shelter or whatever.
The Order of Malta has its origins in an 11th century hospice in Jeruselem and throughout its history has always maintained its focus on living is charism, Tuitio Fidei et Obsequium Pauperum, by focusing on those we refer to as Our Lords, the Poor and the Sick. As a result of this ever-present focus on its original mission, the Order of Malta today remains as vibrant and consequential as at its inception.
Following this millenary tradition, the Cuban Association has established a series of programs which serve the poor and the sick. Through these programs, we, the members of the Cuban Association of Order of Malta, are living the Order’s charism.
