Rome Conference of Receivers and Treasurers

Reflections by Xavier Caceres (Treasurer) - March 2026

I recently had the privilege of representing the Cuban Association at the First International Conference of Receivers and Treasurers of the Sovereign Military Order of Malta held in Rome. The conference focused on strengthening a culture of transparency, accountability, and responsible stewardship so that the Order may continue its mission of defending the faith and serving the poor and the sick.

I was grateful that my wife, Jaclyn Don Cáceres, was able to accompany me. The conference organizers thoughtfully included spouses in several spiritual and cultural activities, reflecting the importance of community and shared commitment to the mission of the Order.

One of the most important messages from the conference was the value of unity across the worldwide Order. Although each Association serves in its own local environment, we are all part of one shared mission. Good governance and clear financial practices help ensure that the resources generously entrusted to the Order are used with integrity and effectiveness, always directed toward those who need our help most.

For our Cuban Association, this guidance reinforces the importance of careful stewardship of donations and thoughtful allocation of resources supporting our humanitarian efforts in Cuba, the Caribbean, and South Florida. Strong financial practices allow us to continue providing assistance to vulnerable communities, support our medical and charitable initiatives, and ensure that the contributions of our members and benefactors have the greatest possible impact.

It was encouraging to see the commitment of the Order worldwide to improve how we manage our resources in order to better serve others. I look forward to applying these insights to support the important work carried out by our Association and to help ensure that our efforts continue to reflect the values and mission of the Order.

In Domino,

Xavier F. Cáceres

Treasurer

Misión Médica a República Dominicana

Marzo 25-29, 2026

Our team of 100 doctors, dentists, physical therapists, nurses, pharmacists, and volunteers recently returned from the medical mission to the ILAC Center in Santiago, Dominican Republic sponsored by the Cuban Association of the Order of Malta. Over a 4-day period, our medical team, which included specialists in Cardiology, Internal Medicine, Family Medicine, Pediatrics, Adult Urology, Emergency Medicine, Radiology, Physical Therapy, Dentistry, Gynecology, Gastroenterology, Pulmonology and Dermatology, treated 1,183 patients. Many of these patients saw 2 or 3 specialists. Over 75 ultrasonographic studies were performed by our team from Misericordia University.

Our gratitude goes to these 100 members of the team who made this happen. There are several to thank: the team at ILAC that organizes the patients and provides transport, food, and lodging for us to carry on this wonderful work. American Airlines, and in particular Dominican native Jesus Cruz, who safely transport our team with our medical supplies that we bring to Santiago two times a year. We thank all who helped with the packing of the supplies and all who made donations to buy them. We are now using an electronic medical record system to help us take care of our patients at the ILAC Center. A special thank you to Dr. Frank Gaudio, Robert Loredo, and Cesar and Yvette Obediente, who helped make this possible. This system allows us to collect demographic health information on our patients which will aid us in giving them better care. Thank you to the Pharmacy team who labored long hours to dispense the medications to our patients as they received the prescriptions electronically from the prescribing doctors. Thank you to the amazing computer scribes and translators from Belmont Abbey and Buena Vista University who worked in all areas of the mission helping to make this happen. Thank you to the Dominican Association of the Order of Malta, who also provided help with translators and medications, coordinated by Kellee Brown. A very special thank you to Father James Raber, who provided spiritual direction, reflection and daily Mass to our team and to the Dominican patients who visited us.

It is an honor to take care of the Dominican Campesinos. Our Dominican friends are a noble people who are so grateful for what we do. But the reality is that even though we bring healing to them in the form of our care and our medications, we receive so much more from them knowing that we are helping our fellow brothers and sisters. We feel this so strongly in our hearts every time we travel to Santiago on these missions.

We will return September 9-13, 2026.

God bless all of you,

Jorge Echenique MD,  Jose Centurion MD,  Frank Gaudio MD,  Cristina Medio
